Try booting the VM in another PC, then something like: apt-get update apt-get install linux-generic this will install the 'generic' version of the kernel (that you can select as default) to boot on your laptop. Try booting the VM in another PC, then something like:
apt-get update
apt-get install linux-generic

this will install the ‘generic’ version of the kernel (that you can select as default) to boot on your laptop.
